evening prior to dinner.
This
evening the Clipper Adventurer will sail through the Firth of Clyde and
along the shores of Arran and the Kilbrannan Sound towards Campbeltown
on the Mull of Kintyre.
Sunday, September 17
Early this morning the Clipper Adventurer will berth in Campbeltown Harbour.
Golfers today play at Machrihanish Golf Club (www.machgolf.com). This
wonderful championship links is isolated on the southwestern tip of The
Mull of Kintyre, between the Isle of Arran and the Hebrides. Considered
one of the finest "Hidden Gems" in the British Isles. The dramatic
first tee shot requires to drive across a corner of the Atlantic Ocean.
Non Golfers will depart Campbeltown and head north traveling along the
western shores of the Kintyre Peninsula. This gentle corner of the Highlands
affords wonderful views over to the Atlantic Ocean and out to the Islands
of Gigha, Islay and Jura. Our first stop will be the charming fishing
village of Tarbert on the shores of Loch Fyne. The tour continues around
the peninsula returning down the eastern shores. The road is narrow and
single lane but offers wonderful views over the Kilbrannan Sound to the
Isle of Arran. We join the coast road at Claonaig, for views of Skipness
Castle, stopping at Carradale, then Saddell Abbey before returning to
Campbeltown.
This evening the Clipper Adventurer will sail to the Ailsa Craig, a volcanic
rock and bird sanctuary that dominates the Ayrshire coastline and remain
at anchor of the Isle of Arran.
Monday, September 18
The Clipper Adventurer will arrive this morning at its berth in Troon
Harbour.
Today golfers will play the Ailsa Course at the Westin Turnberry Resort
(www.turnberry.co.uk) Lying on a spectacular curve of rockbound coast
in the southern reaches of Ayrshire, the Ailsa Course has been host to
the Open
Championship on three occasions. Long regarded as one of the finest courses
in the world, the Ailsa Course first came to international prominence
with the famous duel between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson over the four
days of the 1977 Open. A classic links design that will be enjoyed all
levels of
player.
Non Golfers will tour the Ayrshire Countryside. Visits will include Culzean
Castle, converted by Robert Adam, who designed much of Edinburgh’s
New Town. He included a ‘Roman’ viaduct and Ruined Arch to
add drama to this Italianate castle in its spectacular clifftop setting.
It contains a fine collection of paintings and furniture, and a display
of weapons in the Armoury. The Circular Saloon has a superb panoramic
view over the Firth of Clyde and the beautiful Oval Staircase is Robert
Adam’s final masterpiece of interior design. In 1945 the top floor
was given to General Eisenhower as a token of Scotland’s recognition
of his role during World War II. The next visit will be to Burns Cottage
where on January 25, 1759, while the cold winter winds blew in from the
Atlantic, it became the scene of Scotland's most famous birthday, when
the World's most loved poet Robert Burns was born.
The cottage is now a museum with many interesting artefacts and manuscripts
of Burns life. This evening the M/S Clipper Adventurer will depart Troon
and set sail for our next berth at Douglas, Isle of Mann.
Tuesday, September 19
Early this morning the Clipper Adventurer will berth in Douglas on the
Isle of Man, a Crown Dependency belonging to neither the United Kingdom
nor the European Union. It has its own government, laws, traditions, culture
and stamps. Douglas is the Isle of Man capital with by far the highest
population at over 25,000.
Golf today is at Castletown Golf Links. (www.castletowngolflinks.co.uk)
With water on all sides and two magnificent bays carving great swathes
along each flank, it is a dramatic and wonderfully natural site for a
golf course. The course itself matches the setting, easily qualifying
in the top echelons of links courses in the British Isles. The greens
are small and protected more by the traditional links humps and hollows
than by excessive bunkering. Following the second World War, the course
was re-designed and restored by the respected architect, Mackenzie Ross
(he also designed the Ailsa Course at Turnberry). The course in play today
is generally to his design.
Non Golfers will enjoy a morning tour of Castletown, one of the oldest
towns in the British Isles. Its narrow streets and small fishing cottages
prove this ncient past at every corner. Visit medieval Castle Rushen &
the Old House of Keys. Castle Rushen is one of Europe's most finely preserved
medieval castles. The Castle was developed by successive rulers of Mann
between the 13th and 16th centuries. Following lunch, the afternoon excursion
will involve a spectacular journey on the Snaefell Mountain Railway. The
track runs from Laxey to the summit of Snaefell at 2,036ft, where, on
a clear day spectacular views of Scotland, England, Ireland & Wales
can be enjoyed. This evening the Clipper Adventurer will depart Douglas
and continue across the Irish Sea to
Liverpool, England.
Wednesday, September 20
The Clipper Adventurer will arrive in Liverpool Docks early this morning.
Golfers today will have the opportunity to play Royal Liverpool Golf Club
(www.royal-liverpool-golf.com) only 2 months after it has hosted the British
Open. Despite its somewhat flat and benign appearance, Royal Liverpool
is among the toughest and most demanding of the great seaside championship
links of Britain. Hoylake, as it is more commonly known, lies at the very
heart of the history and development of golf in Britain. Built in 1869,
on what was then the racecourse of the Liverpool Hunt Club, Hoylake is
one of the oldest English seaside courses.
Non Golfers will travel by motorcoach from Liverpool to Chester, one of
the
finest heritage cities in the world, with the most complete city walls
in
Britain. Explore the exciting history of Chester with a short walking
tour
through the unique half-timbered galleried streets and enjoy the splendor
of
the black and white buildings. Returning to Liverpool in the early afternoon,
a visit to the Albert Dock is recommended. Britain’s most popular
heritage
attraction has something for everyone, interesting shops and gift carts,
together with top class attractions such as the Beatles Story, Merseyside
Maritime Museum and the Tate Gallery.
Departing early evening the Clipper Adventurer will sail to Dublin and
the
Ryder Cup Matches.
Thursday, September 21
The Clipper Adventurer will arrive early this morning at her berth in
the heart of Dublin City. Those passengers only participating in Celtic
Links By Sea and not participating in the Ryder Cup program disembark
at this stage.
Golfers remaining onboard for the Ryder Cup Program have the opportunity
to play the Island Golf Club (www.theislandgolfclub.com). Located to the
north of Dublin City it continues a tradition of links golf since its
foundation in 1890. A beautiful links course, in splendid isolation, is
surrounded by the Irish Sea, Donabate beach and Broadmeadow estuary. Nestling
between the high sand dunes it's rugged beauty cannot fail to impress.
Non Golfers have the opportunity to explore Dublin, Ireland’s capital
city. It has fast become one of Europe’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan
cities. The city has always had a reputation as a great historical city,
and its strong links with world literature and the arts are readily apparent.
It certainly has a lot to offer visitors - not least it's diverse attractions.
There is a wealth of architectural detail with the medieval core of the
city surrounded by elegant Georgian squares. A great way to see Dublin
is on foot or simply enjoy a drink in one of Dublin's many pubs and bars.
Late this afternoon there will be an opportunity to attend Opening Ceremony
of the Ryder Cup at the K Club when the players are introduced by their
Team Captains.
Friday, September 22
